Keep in mind that in the event the surface is meant for use as an actual cutting board, they’ll get scarred over time, which increases bacteria chance. So each for aesthetic and overall health motives you might finish up having to replace them much sooner than typical counter-tops.

Yeah, I ought to clarify that I doubt there will be significantly real cutting happening. I’m primarily just seeking to produce it seem better for new tenants and to give just a little supplemental room for cooking prep. There’s regular counters throughout the stove spot, so most cutting goes on there utilizing a standard cutting sheet.

Since you say you don’t truly feel it will likely be employed significantly for cutting, you could think about granite or marble. They make fantastic prep surfaces for things like rolling out dough and also are good for putting scorching pots or pans on. A single trick I go through to maintain the cost down is to utilize the biggest granite tile you’ll be able to uncover using the smallest grout line as opposed to getting granite slab.

You may need to tile your countertop. Either with granite tiles or ceramic. It’s a straightforward task, and inexpensive.
I had the Ikea Pronomen countertop and it had been a disaster. Looked like crap as a result of staining, knife cuts, and curled up like a potato chip. But I used it for 5 many years, so there’s that.

The earlier tenants while in the residence we are at present renting in fact did this and I think they just picked up a thick piece of wood (I will not know what type) from Property Depot and screwed it in on the prime of the cabinet. What they did not do was coat it with something (not even oil) so now it’s got water rings throughout. I genuinely need to sand it down and stain it sooner or later.

I’ve a butcher-block countertop equivalent to that Ikea piece. (Which is a very wonderful cost, btw. I was planning to propose you build your own personal butcher-block best, but except if you presently possess a well-equipped store, you’d have a hard time doing it yourself for under forty bucks.)
My butcher-block counter comes clean nicely by using a scrub sponge and soapy water, and I re-oil it on occasion. I have previously re-sanded it once, and can do so once again soon. Gets rid of the scarring and surface stains, and looks completely new. Simply carried out in the weekend morning.
